International Day against Fascism and Anti-Semitism
The International Day against Fascism and Anti-Semitism is an annual commemoration of the 'Kristallnacht' pogrom that occurred on the November 9th, 1938. All across Germany, Jewish shops had their windows smashed giving rise to the name Kristallnacht. The nationwide razing of synagogues and physical attacks on Jews makes this day a symbolic beginning of the Holocaust.
The UNITED and pan-European anti-racism network coordinates the celebration of this day throughout Europe. In today’s social and political climate the rise of many streams of neo-nazism gives the commemoration new meaning and poignant relevance. By remembering past victims we highlight and share solidarity with the increasing numbers of people currently experiencing the horrors of racist violence and assault. Organizations from 43 countries will host various activities on this day addressing issues related to the new wave of racist ideologies and practices spanning the globe.
