Peace Petition Signed in Sarajevo
Sarajevo, Oct 25, 2009 - The Altruist NGO Svjetlo from Sarajevo organized the signing of the „Peace Petition“, on Sunday, October 25, in Sarajevo. With their signature, the citizens of Sarajevo made a contribution to nonviolent responce to violence.
The petition aims to condemn the murder, vandalism, violence and the events and statements inciting ethnic intolerance during and after the football match in Široki Brijeg between FC Široki and FC Sarajevo.
“We started the petition because we saw that peace messages failed to gain prominence in the public, and gave way to the views of the extremists, which we hope are in the minority in the socity. Peace should have no alternative and let the voice of pacifists be heard”, says Haris Čaušević from Svjetlo NGO.
Čaušević adds that in the location on Ferhadija Street pedestrian zone in down-town Sarajevo, 706 signatures were collected over two hours of signing (12-14:00), or one signature in ten seconds.
“I find it important to point out that the youth with light mental retardation participated in the action (they talked about violence, condemned it, distributed leaflets and made their proposals for future action), and proved once again their social responsibility and civic activism”, Čaušević said.
Citizens can sign the petition online at the following address www.thepetitionsite.com/1/nvo-svjetlo-mirovna-peticija.
