Jose Manuel Barroso mulls commissioner for minorities
Sofia, Nov 25, 2009 - EC President Jose Manuel Barroso on Tuesday told MEPs in Strasbourg that he was considering appointing a special commissioner in charge of minority rights.
Roma people form the bulk of EU’s minorities, with some 10 million of them scattered across the Old Continent, but mainly in Romania, Hungary, Slovakia and Italy. Minority rights will most probably be part of the new Human Rights portfolio – the first of its kind in the 60-year history of the EU.
