Friday Anti-Violence Rally To Go Ahead
BELGRADE -- 01.10.2009.-- A rally against impunity of violence will take place in Pioneer Park tomorrow as planned, the organizers say.
The organizers said that Interior Minister Ivica Dačić had told them that the meeting would not be prohibited.
In an earlier statement, the organizers invited members of the public to attend to show that they did not accept a party state and denial of their Constitutional rights.
The meeting's organizers include the Youth Initiative for Human Rights and the Civil Rights Defenders.
Deputy Police Chief Željko Nikač told B92 earlier that the meeting had been banned for technical reasons.
“They’re technical details, arising from the Belgrade assembly’s decision on sites an d locations where these kinds of meetings can be held. The other decision is of a technical nature… and concerns the location. That location is in the Nature Park," Nikač said.
“In question is the possibility for technical equipment, communications, audio. So, for now, as far as I know, that was the reason why they were asked, why they were told that they couldn’t have it there,” he explained.
