Foreign Support for Belgrade Pride Parade
The organizers of the cancelled, in reality banned Pride Parade in Belgrade receive support from abroad. Next Wednesday, September 30, a protest was announced by the Austrian Association of Homosexuals, in front of the Serbian Embassy in Vienna.
Similar protests were already held in several European cities, like the protests of September 24 in Berlin.
"The extreme right won. It’s month-long campaign successfully threatened the safety of potential participants. In spite of international solidarity, the authorities refused to provide protection from fascist thugs. For that reason, we decided to organize the protests in front of the Serbian Embassy”, says the Austrian Association of Homosexuals.
Women activists protested last Saturday in the central square in Vukovar and condemned the ban of the Belgrade Pride Parade. They gathered in front of the Town Hall and stood there silently for a half an hour, trying to "use their silence to demonstrate their disagreement with the events in Belgrade and similar developments that take place all over the world every day".
“The key issue is why should we, in Vukovar, protest something that happened in another country. Human rights are universal and only if we treated them as such we will be able to respect and protect them. We gathered here to condemn the violence and human rights infringements, when a group of people were prevented from gathering in public. That is a direct blow on democracy and human rights”, says Dragana Stojić, one of the organizers.
Last Thursday, September 25, protests were held in front of Serbian embassy in London, in support to the LGBT population in Serbia. About 30 persons gathered in the protests and presented the Embassy with a protest letter. Similar protests were announced to take place in San Francisco (U.S.) and Budapest.
