EU Side Event at the OSCE Human Dimension Implementation Meeting
6 Oct, 2009 - Co-hosted with the Swedish Presidency of the EU, FRA organised a side-event on "Freedom of Expression on the Internet - possibilities and challenges". Freedom of expression on the Internet is topical throughout the OSCE region,
and also one of the priority areas of the Swedish Presidency of the European Union. As a traditional human right, freedom of expression is in many ways being reshaped with the development of new technologies. Modern developments on the Internet challenge, yet also enable freedom of expression.
A panel consisting of Professor Lorna Woods of City University in London, author of the report ‘Freedom on the Net' Karin Deutsch Karlekar, and Susan Pointer from Google, highlighted the issue from various perspectives and discussed ways of promoting fundamental rights on the Internet. The panel was moderated by Sweden's Human Rights Ambassador Jan Nordlander and introduced by Morten Kjaerum and Miklos Haraszti, OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media. The event was thematically linked to the Agency's Fundamental Rights Conference 2008.
