Campaign for Introduction of Direct Democracy in BiH Constitution
The “Why Not” association, in cooperation with its partners – Dosta Movement, OP Revolt, UNS Geto, Ormar, Odisej, Srebrenica Youth Centre, DVOC, University of Sarajevo Human Rights Centre, starts a campaign for introduction of direct democracy into the BiH Constitution, titled „Ne zaUSTAVljajte nas!“ (Don’t Stop Us!)
The campaign results from citizens’ need to influence the decision-makers and make decisions about their fate alone, not just vote in elections and then leave the elected officials make their own decisions, which can be dangerous for both society and citizens.
The campaign aims to introduce the institutes of direct democracy into the Constitution and allow the citizens access to democratic instruments such as the referendum, popular initiative, popular veto and popular revoke.
The campaign will be implemented in 15 cities and municipalities in Bosnia and Herzegovina, aiming to inform the citizens about its proposals and collect 30,000 signatures in support for amendments to the Constitution and lobby the Parliamentary Assembly to adopt the amendments.
The amendments would allow the citizens to decide directly on important issues for Bosnia and Herzegovina (referendum), launch legislative initiatives (popular initiative) and demand resignations from responsible officials (popular revoke).
Direct democracy is an institute that exists in most democratic countries in the world, allowing citizens to participate in the governance of their society. This campaign is a chance to make BiH society just and democratic and to introduce instruments that would allow the citizens to stop the arbitrary actions of responsible officials.
